Let us think for a moment of the space around us, in all of its three dimensions. Now let us imagine a man moving freely wthin this space. In two dimensions he will be completely self-sufficient in his movements. his legs will take him wherever he likes. But if he wants to tackle the third dimension, he’ll need to hang onto a rope, dangle form a balloon or … use a lift.
